9 to 5

March 27, 2012 in Reading, Research

9 to 5? No way. 8:30 p.m.: Kids are sleeping, work can go on. Back to writing funding proposals. Fight the mail flood. Maybe read an article or two? Tonight on my reading list …

Project Work

What I really like about DH is – although I love theory and usually get classified as “the theory guy” – getting real projects done. To help creating information rich, useful research resources. Like the “Book of the Dead – Digital Archive“. My job here mainly lies in the concepts and the management of the DH side of this long term project. But there are other tasks on my desk as well. Today I should go on with writing the documentation. And I’d like to find some time to think about further strategies for the visualization of the corpus and it’s structure. The most beautiful piece that we have created so far is a complete visualization of the “canonicity” of the order of the magic spells on the 3000 text witnesses – which has been programmed (eXist –> xQuery –> SVG) by my – oh so ingenious – colleague Ulrike.

TelKo

… is what we call a telephon conference over here in Germany. 16:00 TelKo of the DARIAH-DE special task force on “creating a one page mission statement” on what DARIAH is really all about. At least, today it should be the “final” conference on the final version of that paper. Let’s hope that this time all microphones and speakers are working. As you can see, I never managed to install my camera correctly (upper left corner). But now it’s to late to waste time on that. I’ll simply wait for my next laptop …

Funding Proposals

March 27, 2012 in All Day, Project Work, Writing

If I had a look at my work contracts or work package descriptions, there surely wouldn’t be mentioned funding prosposals as part of my job. But reality shows a completely different picture. Consultancy for project conceptualization and writing parts of funding proposals is an important and very time consuming part of my daily work. The CCeH has developed into some sort of service provider for the digital aspects of research projects. So colleagues from our university as well as from other institutions keep coming to us, often telling the same story: “we had this nice project idea but …”

  • a) we see, that we should have a digital component in it (as regards the sources, the analytic work and/or the publication)
  • b) the funding body has told us, that they liked the project but missed (and dimissed the proposal for the lack of) a digital component in it

That’s where we start to work. Understand and take up the main ideas, reconceptualize the project for a digital methodology, write the respective parts of the proposal.
In these days, we are working with three projects that have to deliver their papers within the next three days: one genetic critical edition (based in Switzerland), one correspondence edition (based in the UK but with an european perspective), and one small project on a specific infrastructure and tool for harvesting, processing and converting language data from a certain field (within a German framework).
On the other hand, we are awaiting decisions for two proposals until the end of the week: one smaller project with a 3 year run time (and 50% FTE for us as DH partner) and two really “fat” projects with 15 years (50% FTE with us) and 24 years (100% FTE) respectively.
And when the week is over, we’ll turn towards the other project ideas in the pipeline: they have their own deadlines coming up.
Ok, but for now: write a page on the digital methodology and another page on the work plan for the funding proposal on the correspondence project …

Home Office

8:30. Rabbits fed. Kids taken to school and kindergarten respectively. Normally I would drive to the university now to go to my office (see picture of my empty workplace in Ulrike’s post) and start to work. But today I will work at home. It’s the one long working day of my wife, so I’ll have to care for the kids when they come home.

In 2010 the day of DH has already fallen once on my home office day. Find the differences in the picture from then and now …

About Me

March 9, 2012 in Biography, Blogging, Uncategorized

Again, just a short update to the day-of-DH about pages from 2011, 2010 and 2009.

What has changed since then? What am I going to do this year?

I’m out of teaching nearly completely. That means: active teaching. I have changed somehow to the analytic and political side of teaching, mainly in the context of DARIAH-DE. There we provide an overview on DH programs in Germany and Austria; we will do a survey on DH related teaching in the “traditional” disciplines, maintain a database on theses in DH, make concepts for summer schools in DH in Germany, and work on curricula, both on the national and international level (we will have a workshop and a panel discussion on these topics at the DH2012 in Hamburg). Active “teaching” will probably be restricted to an IDE summer school (in autumn) on “digital scholarly editing” for advanced participants – if the colleagues from Chemnitz can find the funding for it.

My main work focus is still on the Cologne Center for eHumanities (CCeH) where we organize the transition of long-term research projects at the Northrhine-Westfalia Academy of Science and the Arts from book oriented to digital forms of work an publishing. In the last months we have mainly be working on a project from egyptology (The Book of the Dead – A Digital Archive of Text Witnesses). That is 45% of my Job. The other 55% are still in DARIAH-DE (Digital Research Infrastructures for the Arts and Humanities – German Branch).

These are the official numbers from my work contracts. Of course there are other affiliations (like with the Institute for Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE) – now an officially registered association). And all these affiliations lead to further activities and work to be done – so let’s start to get it done today.
