Day of DH Dawns

Greetings!  I’m Joe Gilbert, Head of the Scholars’ Lab at the University of Virginia Library.  My Day of DH starts with two prime movers of the digital humanities world: coffee and email.  While I whittle down my inbox count, I’ll include some information about what the Scholars’ Lab is and what I do here.

The Scholars’ Lab supports digital scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, with particular emphasis on methodolgies employing geospatial, temporal, textual, and qualitative analysis tools.  The Scholars’ Lab combines the services of UVA’s former digital centers: the GeoStat Center, the E-Text Center, and the Research Computing Support group.

Day-to-day, I consult with teaching faculty and graduate students on digital projects, manage our team of three full-time staff (one research computing/qualitative analysis specialist and two GIS specialists) and 5-or-so student assistants, and contribute to the web design and development efforts of our department (mostly using XML, XSLT, CSS, Javascript/Ajax, and Ruby on Rails). I also coordinate various outreach events and our exciting graduate fellowship program.
