RACE 2010 Conference Update

I am pleased to provide you some exciting updates on the tenth annual conference sponsored by the Researchers and Academics of Colour for Equity/Equality (R.A.CE.): “Race-Making and the State: Between Postracial Neoliberalism and Racialized Terrorism,” to be held in Edmonton 8-10 October 2010.

Abstracts: We received some terrific abstracts from across Canada and the United States. Due to the unprecedented volume and time to review, acceptance notices will be going out shortly.

Keynotes: The biographies for our keynotes have been updated.  As well, we can confirm the title of two keynote presentations, with others to follow:

-       L.H.M. Ling (The New School), “ASIA IS A WOMAN: On Patriarchy, Territorialization, and Transformative Strategies.”

-       Robert A. Williams, Jr. (The University of Arizona Rogers College of Law), “From Aristotle to Avatar: The Savage in Western Imperial Imaginary.”

Workshops: The web site now includes descriptions for two workshops.

-        “From PhD to Tenure and Promotion: Navigating Race in the Academy” will be led by Dr. Narda Razack, Associate Dean (Faculty), Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, York University.

-        A workshop on Indigenous human rights, “Translating Critical Race Theory into Practice in the Inter-American Human Rights System: Hul’qumi’num Treaty Group v. Canada” will be led by Dr. Robert A. Williams, Jr. E. Thomas Sullivan Professor of Law and American Indian Studies, The University of Arizona Rogers College of Law.
