Seven interactive essays on digital nonlinear storytelling
edited by Matt Soar & Monika Kin Gagnon
Database|Narrative|Archive is an anthology of seven essays focusing on the emergent medium of nonlinear digital storytelling, featuring contributions by Sharon Daniel, Amir Husak, Adrian Miles, Brigid Maher and Jen Proctor, Will Luers, Chris Hanson and Suzanne Scott. Created in Scalar, a new publishing platform for multimedia scholarship under development at the University of Southern California,

Database|Narrative|Archive offers provocative arguments and analyses of contemporary mediaworks including Katerina Cizek’s Highrise Project, David Dufresne and Philippe Brault’s Prison Valley (2011), Perry Bard’s participatory remake Man With a Movie Camera: The Global Remake.

The nine authors of these seven open-access, peer-reviewed ‘essays’ engage Scalar’s multimodality through creative, critical and historical approaches that explore what media theorist Anne Friedberg has called the digital page’s “new axes of depth and layering,” engaging critical, conceptual, and creative questions at the heart of contemporary nonlinear storytelling in this formative era of the Web.

The collection, edited and art directed by Matt Soar and Monika Kin Gagnon, draws on many of the ideas and arguments first presented at the D|N|A Symposium, held at Concordia University, Montreal, in May 2011.
