I am Surveyor: A Short Film

Serving as a

Counter-Monument to the

“Surveying for the Future” Monument in Edmonton, Alberta

The “I am Surveyor” counter-monument was created in order to address a number of aspects of the “Surveying for the Future” monument located on the Legislature grounds in Edmonton, Alberta. With this monument, I hope to inspire thought about the idea of ‘surveyor’ and ‘surveying’ and what exactly these terms mean and imply, particularly in the context of the “Surveying for the Future” monument, and with reference to surveyors in Canadian history.

The opening quotation is from:

Berger, John. Ways of Seeing. London, Toronto: British Broadcasting Corporation, Penguin Books, 1972, 8.

The definitions are from:

Soanes, Catherine and Stevenson, Angus. The Concise Oxford English Dictionary. Eleventh Edition. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2008 [1911].

Music:

Allegro ma non troppo from Beethoven Sinfonia, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Erich Leinsdorf, 2002.
