The IRIS Group was formed in 1996 as a forum whose aim is to raise levels of access for women in the arts, to share ideas and offer mutual support. The artists of IRIS are inviting women in Edmonton to participate in an ongoing photography, writing and installation project that is intended to become an exhibition featuring the thoughts, ideas and images of women across many communities. Wednesday May 2 - Saturday May 5: Women Writing and Reading Book Exhibition
Bruce Peel Special Collections Library, Rutherford South (Map)
The Bruce Peel Special Collections Library at the University of Alberta will present an exhibition of texts that show the diverse and multiple forms of women's writing and reading, "past and present, global and local." This exhibition will include many forms of women's writing and reading from the present and the past, including: fiction, drama and poetry; conduct books, gift books, and housekeeping manuals; women's bibles and religious texts; journalism and travel writing; non-fiction writing in the areas of political theory, history, and science; children's books; diaries and letters; and artists' books, graphic novels, and small presses.
Guided tours of the exhibition will be available during the conference.

Wednesday May 2 from 7-9 PM: Reception in FAB Gallery & Visit to Print Study Centre
Fine Arts Building (Map)
Conference participants are invited to the Fine Arts Building Gallery at the University of Alberta for a reception on this opening evening of the conference. From here, participants will be able to visit the Print Study Centre to view a special exhibit of works by several prominent Canadian women artists in the collection, including Jennifer Dickson, Janet Cardiff and Davida Kidd.
Thursday May 3 from 7-9 PM: Performance by the Madrigal Singers Choir
Convocation Hall, Arts Building (Map)
The University of Alberta's Madrigal Singers will perform for conference participants at Convocation Hall in the Arts Building, preceded by a reception in the Arts Foyer. Director Leonard Ratzlaff, Chair, Department of Music, will conduct a program of mainly women composers. Reception at 7 PM, Performance at 8 PM
Friday May 4 from 7-10 PM: Performance of The Fighting Days
Second Playing Space, Timms Centre (Map)
Students from the Department of Drama at the U of A will perform Wendy Lill's The Fighting Days, directed by Kim McCaw. Audience members are invited to stay after the performance for a brief discussion on "women in public life" with Former Deputy Prime Minister The Honourable Anne McLellan, filmmaker Anne Wheeler and Sherrill Grace, moderated by Janice MacKinnon.
Reception to follow in the lobby of the Timms Centre for the Arts. Performance at 7 PM, discussion at 8 PM and reception at 9 PM.
