Charles van den Heuvel studied Art History at the University of Groningen and gained his PhD in 1991 with a thesis on the introduction of Italian city and fortification construction to the Netherlands in the period 1540-1609. After his study he worked in various functions, at the Netherlands Art History Institute in Florence and at various universities. Van den Heuvel was a senior researcher at the Virtual Knowledge Studio for the Humanities and Social Sciences of the KNAW. Since January 2011 he has been a research manager in the history of science and a research leader in the ‘Circulation of Knowledge’ theme at Huygens ING. In conjunction with Professor Wijnand Mijnhardt, director of the Descartes Centre (University of Utrecht), he supervises the NWO project entitled ‘Circulation of Knowledge and Learned Practices in the 17th-Century Dutch Republic’. In addition, as a researcher he also participates in the Alfalab of the KNAW and is a member of the e-Humanities Research Group of the KNAW. His most recent research within Huygens ING covers the relationships between the history of science and the history of libary and information studies. In this context, he is particularly oriented toward the history of the classification of the sciences and the (visual) representation of (universal) knowledge and the history of the World Wide Web. Further, his research is also directed toward the application of digital resources and methods in the Humanities.
