Kule Institute Special Publication on Sustainable Research: Modelling Nearly Carbon-Neutral Practices in the 21st Century

The Kule Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) invites proposals for inclusion in a special collection that explores the themes of Sustainable Research and/or Citizen/Activist Humanities and/or Eco-DH.

KIAS recently wrapped up its 6th annual Around the World e-Conference, this year on the theme of Sustainable Research: Modelling Nearly Carbon-Neutral Practices in the 21st Century. Researchers from around the world came together to discuss sustainable research in its many forms and to address the question of how we as an academic community can work together to learn how to better mobilize ideas without flying so many people. We also called attention to the geographical, financial and legal/political barriers that limit scholarly dialogue by excluding researchers from participating in traditional conferences. We asked how we might consider alternative or hybrid formats that are more inclusive, and ultimately more sustainable.

As a way of continuing the conversation beyond the Around the World event, the Kule Institute is thrilled to announce that we will be preparing a collection of selected works for submission to a publisher. We invite proposals for papers inspired by or related to the conference theme of Sustainable Research and/or Citizen/Activist Humanities and/or Eco-DH. In order to reflect the diverse disciplines and forms that were represented at the conference, we will be open to non-traditional formats including creative pieces, personal essays and reflections, blog posts, and other styles.

We are especially interested in works that explore:

  • Academic responsibility and climate activism
  • Ecological and/or activist-driven humanities
  • Art in the anthropocene and/or sustainability and research-creation
  • Experiments in alternatives to traditional conferences, including online events, unconferences, hackathons and other modes
  • Building sustainable environments on campus, including libraries, labs and DH centres
  • Sustainable research in partnership with indigenous communities
  • Research in remote locations, such as the Canadian North
  • Histories of environmentalism and/or energy
  • Environmentalism and the public and/or environmentalism and the media

 
Proposals of  250-500 words along with a short bio of the author(s) should be sent to kias@ualberta.ca by October 14th, 2018. Authors will be notified of the selection by November 5th, 2018. The finished pieces will be due Feb. 15, 2018 (TBC).
