Andrea Waters-Rist is an Assistant Professor of Osteoarchaeology in the Faculty of Archaeology, Leiden University. Her main research interest is the interrelationship of health and diet in past peoples, in particular for infants and children, through stable isotope reconstructions of diet, and assessment of markers of physiological stress and disease. In addition, Andrea conducts dental anthropology research for the purposes of reconstructing activity patterns and assessing biological relatedness. Her research has involved analyses of human skeletal collections from many areas of the world, including Siberia, The Netherlands, Nicaragua, Greece, and Canada. For the BHAP project Andrea will be expanding upon her PhD research from the Cis-Baikal area. This research demonstrated clear differences between Early Neolithic and Late Neolithic-Bronze Age groups, in part related to the riverine vs. lacustrine setting of different sub-groups, in terms of activity (the use of teeth as tools), ancestry (dental non-metric traits), subadult diet (stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes), and health (dental enamel defects). Future research will focus the nature of childhood and adolescence in hunter-fisher-gatherer peoples.
