My project uses an ancient DNA approach to investigate the biogeography of Baikal deer through time. Through a comparative study of archaeological samples from multiple sites in the Baikal region, we hope to address questions raised through morphological analysis of the faunal remains, as well as conversations with hunters, related to the possible presence of different deer subspecies and/or populations. We will also explore the relationship between changes in the size of deer populations over time and changes in human behaviour and/or environmental events.
