About the Project

In 1962, the City of Edmonton commissioned a study to examine the current problems of the city and make recommendations about its future growth. The banner above is from the final part of the study: “Urban Renewal.” Reflected in the illustration are representations of Alberta’s rural heritage as well as its future as a centre for urban growth.

The Past Futures project aims to document and analyze visions of the future that, for one reason or another, have never materialized into reality. In some cases, the vision was partly realized, although the utopian nature of the project did not come to fruition. In other cases–such as Edmonton’s new Walterdale Bridge–the vision remains just that: an idea that may or may not become reality.
