Biography
Mark Thoburn is enrolled in OCADU’s Digital Futures program. His focus is the design
and prototyping of interactive experiences, exploring the interplay between gaming, play and ‘brain health’.
Abstract
Qualia is “Planet Earth, the video game” – a game for iOS where players live the lives of animals in the wild. With the help of a consumer-level EEG headset, Qualia can be played using your brainwaves. By engaging in the game’s core mechanics, players are introduced to a Mindfulness meditation practice. By evoking emotional states, players can manipulate in-game events. By design, playing the game produces beneficial / therapeutic outcomes. In short, the game can be considered a brain health product.
