Dr. Hendrik Poiner meets BHAP team and presents lecture "Molecular Epidemiology of the Black Death"

Dr. Fiona Bamforth from the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, and Baikal-Hokkaido Archaeology Project Team member, invited Dr. Hendrik Poiner from McMaster as a visiting lecturer. He presented a lecture on Thursday, October 25 and met with University of Alberta BHAP team members and graduate students.

Hendrik Poinar is particularly interested in the preservation and extraction of DNA from forensic, archeological and paleontological remains. How can DNA persist in environments past its theoretical "time limit"? Once extracted our group likes to use the gene sequences to address questions of evolution, phylogeny, selection and biogeography.
