Dr. Robert Losey presents talk at University of Alberta
February 17, 2012
Dr. Robert Losey presented a talk hosted by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alberta. The lecture, entitled "Dogs, Dates, and Diets: New Analyses of Cis-Baikal's Holocene Canid Remains", was open to the publoc and part of the Department's Fringe Fridays Graduate Speaker Series.
Brief description: The Holocene archaeological record of Siberia's Cis-Baikal region is relatively rich in dog remains, many of them deriving from carefully made burials. Stable isotope analyses of these dog skeletons reveals that many of them had diets similar to their human counterparts. I explore the various implications of humans and dogs being table-mates. These implications span from how we conceptualize domestication, how human-animal relationships are understood, and even relate to issues with the chronology of the local archaeological record.
