Drs. Tatiana Nomokonova and Iuliana Emel'ianova (Irkutsk State Technical University) research in North Baikal

August 27, 2013

An update from Dr. Tatiana Nomokonova about her summer research:

This summer, Drs. Tatiana Nomokonova and Iuliana Emel'ianova (Irkutsk State Technical University) went to North Baikal. We were part of the archaeological field camp organized for kids from Irkutsk, Severobaikal'sk and Baikal'skoe. Kids had an opportunity to excavate a trench at a Late Holocene habitation site, and to participate in two excavations of human remains.

The first two photos below are from the plane we took from Irkutsk (we spent two days in airport waiting for it to depart as this plane is very small and it is afraid of any weather conditions). We were siting right behind the pilots.

Tatiana and Iulia were also working with seal hunters living in Baikal'skoe settlement, and ate cold smoked seal ribs (so good in comparison to boiled seal fat chunks and flippers Tatiana was eating before...).

The first photo below is an image of smoked seal ribs. On the second photo - one of the hunters showing the cart, which seal hunters take with them in spring when they live on the ice in the middle of Lake Baikal. The third is just a pretty photo of North Baikal.
