March 22, 2012
The Russian televsion station Mediaholding AS Baikal TB ran a news piece about new technology donated by BHAP to the Irkutsk State Technical University. The piece focusses on the addition of a 3D scanner to the university.
Dr. Robert Losey, presently visiting Irkutsk from the University of Alberta, is shown scanning a 7,000 year-old dog skull that was excavated from a grave in the Angara region of Russia. He mentions how easily scholars and students from Russia will now be able to share this scanned image with their Canadian counterparts simply by sending an email.
The article describes how, in the past, much time and money was required to illustrate and photograph archaeological material which were then difficult to share with foreign scholars. With the addition of the new 3D scanner, Irkutsk archaeologists can save time and money and be able to create incredibly detailed virtual copies of artifacts and osteological material that can then be easily shared with scholars all over the world.
Irkutsk State Technical University plans on creating a new laboratory for international research which will house the 3D scanner and other pieces of high-tech equipment.
